|
Pianist-singer Steve Sandner likes to perform in a trio or quartet setting but also often performs solo. He grew up listening to the piano players of his father’s generation--Mel Powell, Teddy Wilson, Nat Cole, Oscar Peterson--and the blues singers--Joe Williams, Louis Jordan, Jimmy Witherspoon; and, of course, Sinatra. His repertoire includes a vast array of jazz and blues standards and originals, both vocals and instrumentals. The songs Steve selects are vehicles for his band to swing and “find the groove” in a bluesy, down-to-earth harmonic and melodic style--a style that reaches beyond a strictly jazz audience. His audience includes avid jazz fans, and also many listeners who hadn’t listened to much jazz before finding Steve’s music.
His recordings include four self-produced CD’s: “Goin’ To Chicago” and “I’m Sticking With You, Baby” with Detroit trumpeter Marcus Belgrave; “Catch 38” with Chicago vocalist Holly McGuire; and “Cherry Red” with saxophonist Lyn Halliday. His fifth CD, recorded in Paris in April, 2005 will be released soon. Steve has now relocated in Sedona, Arizona.
Steve started performing around the Chicago area in the mid-60's when he started playing engagements with his father in Crystal Lake, Illinois. After majoring in trumpet at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Steve studied classical piano with Dada Mehta at Eastern Michigan University and then soon formed his own jazz combo which appeared in Chicago clubs such as the Pump Room and the Gaslight Club, and he also appeared with The Marcus Belgrave Quintet at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in Detroit. The Steve Sandner Trio was the opening act at the inaugural 1993 Suttons Bay (Michigan) Jazz Festival, and he has since performed there many times. Steve’s other appearances include Chicago’s Intercontinental Hotel, Andy’s Jazz Club, Pete Miller’s, and the Signature Room at the 96th floor of the John Hancock Building. A highlight in his career was a 1989 Asian trip for a four-month engagement with his quartet at the Sommerset Room in the Westin Hotel in Singapore. In 2003 Steve performed for four months at the Hyatt Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco, Africa; and he has made several appearances in Paris, France, most recently in April, 2005.

Le style de Steve suit la mouvance principale de jazz et de la musique populaire des années 40 et 50. Selon les cas, Steve peut ajouter à sa performance un air de tube récent ou un morceau semi-classique. Il est particulièrement influencé par les pianistes Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum et les vocalistes Nat Cole, Jimmy Witherspoon, le chanteur de Blues, et Frank Sinatra. Cependant, les rythmes élancés et les chansons douces et mélodieuses de Steve sont personnalisés. Un style et une présentation appréciés à la fois par les « accros » du Jazz et les auditeurs nouvellement initiés au monde du Jazz.
Pianiste et vocaliste, Steve Sandner commença à jouer professionnellement de la musique à l'age de l'adolescence avec son père au début des années 60. Tout en finissant ses études secondaires, Steve forma un trio de Piano-Jazz et se produisit dans la région de chicago. Après le lycée, Steve bénéficia d'une bourse d'études à la célèbre école de Musique de Berklee à Boston. Il signa alors plusieurs contrats avec les night-clubs, hôtels, restaurants et autres complexes dans la région de Chicago et Michigan.
Steve joue à la fois seul et avec son quartet et se produit régulièrement dans les soirées branchées de Chicago tels que le Andy's Jazz Club, l'hôtel Intercontinental, l'Hotel Drake, le restaurant Luciano, le City life Club sur la 83e Rue et la « Signature Room » au 95e étage du building John Hancock.
Au Michigan, Steve joue régulièrement au festival de Jazz de Suttons Bay au nord du Michigan avec son propre trio, avec le groupe Gary Carden Big Band et avec le groupe Harry Goldson, et joue à Detroit avec le trompettiste de Marcus Belgrave's Quintet.
Steve a enregistré et produit 2 CD avec Marcus Belgrave « Goin' To Chicago » en 1998 et « I'm Sticking With You, Baby » en 2000, disponibles dans le commerce électronique amazon.com. Ses autres enregistrements comprennent un morceau avec le vocaliste de Chicago Holly McGuire « Catch 38 » (produit par Steve) ainsi que sa première production « Cherry Red » une session de 1989 avec la célèbre saxophoniste ténor de Chicago Lyn Halliday, un total de 4 CD.
